I think I am correct in saying that this is the 3rd year that the CDBA have tried to run a Top 5 singles competition. Based on a format that has proved popular within other districts, this was identified as a potential end of season competition.
Unfortunately, in it's 1st year, it suffered from teething problems due to a combination of wet weather & playing 21 up.
Last year the comp was planned for Sundays in July but was then changed to September. The rules were also changed to play sets (like the telly).
This year the dates were changed again due to a clash of dates with the DBA finals. My understanding of this was that Yoker had a pair playing and Dalmuir could not hold 2 full green games on the same date. I appreciate that Yoker would have a fair number of members supporting the DBA finals but surely the sensible option would have been for Yoker & S/hill to get together and arrange this tie midweek. By moving the whole comp back 2 months to a time when night-time bowls is nearly impossible has totally devalued this tourney. All clubs will have weekend games on their syllabus thus creating a problem finding free greens to hold these games.
The seniors have proved that there is potential for a team singles comp but the District have to give it a chance to flourish.
