Top 5 Singles

Postby tactically naive » Mon Sep 14, 2009 4:54 pm

I think I am correct in saying that this is the 3rd year that the CDBA have tried to run a Top 5 singles competition. Based on a format that has proved popular within other districts, this was identified as a potential end of season competition.
Unfortunately, in it's 1st year, it suffered from teething problems due to a combination of wet weather & playing 21 up.
Last year the comp was planned for Sundays in July but was then changed to September. The rules were also changed to play sets (like the telly).
This year the dates were changed again due to a clash of dates with the DBA finals. My understanding of this was that Yoker had a pair playing and Dalmuir could not hold 2 full green games on the same date. I appreciate that Yoker would have a fair number of members supporting the DBA finals but surely the sensible option would have been for Yoker & S/hill to get together and arrange this tie midweek. By moving the whole comp back 2 months to a time when night-time bowls is nearly impossible has totally devalued this tourney. All clubs will have weekend games on their syllabus thus creating a problem finding free greens to hold these games.
The seniors have proved that there is potential for a team singles comp but the District have to give it a chance to flourish.

This is 99% correct....Yoker BC had a player in the singles final...!!! You are 100% correct to suggest that the Yoker v S'hill game should have been rescheduled between themselves during that time, say within a week of the original date. Again I can only say that it is a flaw with the CDBA and lack of thought causes mayhem yet again!! I still think it is a competition for the end of the season....personal opinion. Whilst I'm on the subject it doesn't help when a POWERNATION such as Old Kilpatrick cannot field 5 players and scratch from the competition.....disgraceful....!!!!

Couldn't believe that OK had scratched. Don't know their reasons but surely they could have found 5 players.
I do believe the Top 5 is a worthy competition although the problems we have had in rescheduling the League Cup Final means that our team will not be our 1st choice. Hopefully those involved will enjoy the opportunity to represent the club in a single-handed competition.
For the record, I'm happy to see this played as an end of season tourney. To be playing the CDBA Top 5 /Top 10 and DBA Top 10 all the same time, through July, seems to be total chaos.

Surely at the end of the season there are many occasions to play this tourney. It just needs proper  planning!
The sets format is best way forward in my opinion as we already have AJ Campbell, Scottish Singles, Dunbartonshire and CoC 21 up.

I agree with sets play for this comp. All games should finish around about the same time making it more exciting for the players and spectators.
