I've just completed 5 games in 6 days at 5 different greens, so here is my honest evaluation of the surfaces and a couple of the clubs.
Old Kilpatrick......Pace very good but the only 2 good roads that I found all night were Station Rd and Dumbarton Rd.
Yoker.......Rink had 4 drawing hands and was playing at a nice pace. Big improvement from previous years.
Milngavie......I think we may have benifited from the DBA playing there on Sat as the pace of the green was very good.
Dalmuir and Clydebank.......I don't think anyone would be surprised to hear that we share the same greenkeeper, unfortunately we seem to be sharing the same goat that he's using to graze on the grass.
To be fair Dalmuir's green is playing better than ours but they don't look pretty. I've played there twice now and have had a rink with drawing hands both times.
The difference in attitude of the committees at Dalmuir and Old Kilpatrick could not have been more different.
When I left OK last week I accepted that I had lost to a very good player on a rink that had been moved off normal settings to try and break in the green at this early stage of the season. (the marker and current club champ there told us they were about 6 feet off league settings).
Last night however a director of OK told me that "the green had been moved deliberately to stop kindred club members from getting the chance to learn the green. If Milngavie had been playing Claremont at OK they would have been given the championship rink" .
If that was the case then OK owe 6 of their members, who were playing ties, a rebate on their fees as they had to suffer along with us.
Contrast that to the attitude of big Peter Mason at Dalmuir who turned his green around last night to give the players in the A J Campbell a chance to play on good rinks. Peter was unhappy with the way his green played during the David Syme and wanted their visitors to enjoy their game.
A point that would no doubt be wasted on the OK player.
Never thought I would say this but well done Peter
